Dyslexia Pathways can provide friendly and expert dyslexia support and training in assistive technology to students at university.

As well as being experts in providing dyslexia support services our staff are also dyslexic and so have unique insights into the needs of people with dyslexia from both a professional and personal perspective.

If you are dyslexic and have a dyslexia assessment report you will be eligible to claim Disabled Student Allowance, (DSA) through you local authority. Disabled Student Allowance will enable to buy a lap top or computer and software to help you with your dyslexic issues.

If you are dyslexic and think are eligible to claim Disabled Students Allowance, contact student services at your university and ask them how you can claim Disabled Student Allowance.

PATHWAYS TO FUNDING - DISABLED STUDENTS ALLOWANCE (DSA)

DSA is available to those who incur extra costs studying because of their condition provided by the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS). It’s not means tested but you will require proof of your condition from an expert, and it must be re-applied for every study year. So, if your dyslexia means you require support from an organisation such as Dyslexia Pathways and this is agreed by the SAAS, your DSA will meet the costs.

The point of DSA is to ensure that students with disabilities are not disadvantaged compared to students without a disability. Dyslexia can make studying challenging, but help is out there to get you through it. For further details and how to apply, just go to www.student-support-saas.gov.uk/_forms/dsa_notes_11_12.pdf where you will find all the information you need under various headings. Here’s a summary of what you’ll have to do; all these details can be checked at the above website, or you can seek help from Dyslexia Pathways or the place you will be studying:

  • Check your course is one eligible for DSA
  • Check you have been a UK resident for long enough
  • Obtain proof of your dyslexia, generally though a letter from an Educational Psychologist (other professionals may be acceptable but this should be checked with SAAS) or from a previous place of study confirming that a professional diagnosed you with dyslexia
  • Complete the DSA application form – again you can get help from Dyslexia Pathways or your educational establishment
